What is PRP?

PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, is a well-liked injectable cosmetic therapy. This is because it uses our own platelet-rich blood to organically renew the skin and heal the indications of ageing. PRP is highly safe and has been utilised in medical practice for decades, for sports injuries, hair loss, and more.

Here, we look at PRP, what it is, and how it can be used for skin rejuvenation.

What is PRP?

A cosmetic injection procedure called PRP makes use of the patient’s own platelet-rich plasma. Growth factors are present in the PRP. Overall skin rejuvenation is achieved by accelerating the body’s normal synthesis of collagen and elastin when PRP is injected back into the skin.

Topical anaesthetic are not normally required as PRP should be PH neutral and not particularly painful. A clinician will take a small blood sample; typically only 10ml is required. The plasma & platelets are then separated from the remaining blood components by spinning this for five minutes in a centrifuge, within a specifically approved & designed medical device. Finally, the treatment region is reinjected with platelet-rich plasma to encourage the formation of collagen and elastin. The quality of the PRP is very dependent on the medical devices used.

PRP offers a variety of advantages. The procedure can enhance the texture and tone of the skin, lessen fine lines and scars, and increase the production of collagen and skin cells for a plumper, more radiant complexion.

What can PRP help with?

There is a lot of interest in using PRP for anti-ageing and regenerative treatments because of its potential advantages. PRP can help with the following skin conditions/issues:

  • Minimising wrinkles and fine lines
  • Skin tightening and toning
  • Collagen and volume loss
  • Crow’s feet and ‘dark circles beneath the eyes
  • Scarring
  • Burns
  • Skin tone and texture
  • Helps with the early symptoms of ageing

Who is a good candidate?

The ideal candidates for cosmetic procedures are women who are not expecting, lactating or attempting to get pregnant. PRP is suitable and effective on both sexes and all ages.

PRP face treatments use the body’s own platelets and organic processes to provide patients with long-lasting, effective skin regeneration.

Advantages of PRP

  • By using the patient’s own growth factors, PRP facial treatments reduce the risk of adverse effects and allergic responses
  • Natural collagen synthesis smoothes out lines, creases, and wrinkles
  • Those who want to avoid synthetic & artificial materials and methods will benefit greatly from the procedure’s autologous character
  • PRP therapy is for everybody, so both men and women may take advantage of it and enjoy a more young, natural appearance
  • No surgical procedures are necessary during PRP facial rejuvenation
  • After PRP therapy, the skin’s look improves gradually and naturally with long-lasting effects

Risks and side effects

Except for those with clotting disorders requiring blood thinners or other blood-related medical concerns, the treatment is safe for most people. Patients may experience slight bruising or swelling at the site of the injection, however, these side effects should subside within a few days.

Those who are having anticoagulant therapy, have autoimmune diseases, have active cancer of any kind, have severe anaemia, low platelet counts, aberrant platelet function, or are actively infected with a systemic infection may not be current candidates for this treatment. Patients should consult with their doctor.
