Is PRP good for the skin?

How Does PRP Help the Skin?

In recent years, PRP treatments have become synonymous with skin health. A-listers including Kourtney Kardashian have been vocal about its effectiveness, and since then PRP has become one of the most sought-after aesthetic treatments on the market.

So, how does PRP help the skin?

As we age, naturally the body changes, and natural hormone levels begin to decline. This hormonal change results in less collagen production within the skin, which is when we start to show some of the subtle signs of ageing.

In the skin, ageing often presents itself as visible fine lines and wrinkles, loss in volume and overall structure, and a change in skin condition causing it to become drier. Combined with external factors such as sun damage and specific skin conditions like acne, changes to the skin can impact one’s overall self-confidence.

Now, whilst ageing is natural and should be celebrated, many people strive to look younger, and more youthful than their chronological age, and that’s where PRP treatment comes in.

PRP treatment can help to address:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Nasolabial folds
  • Acne scarring
  • Hollowed cheeks
  • Pigmentation

What is PRP?

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy is an injectable, anti-aging procedure that separates key nutrients from the blood to stimulate collagen production and tissue regeneration within the skin.

Human blood contains key components that are individually vital to maintaining overall skin health and body functionality. These components include plasma, growth factors, and platelets that support overall body and skin function. It is these nutrients that are separated from the blood and injected beneath the surface of the skin.

Suitable for all skin types, ages, and ethnicities, PRP works by extracting blood from a patient’s arm, similar to a blood test, and placing it in a special medical device & then a centrifuge. This centrifuge then spins the blood to separate the platelet-rich plasma. The platelets are a reservoir for growth factors. This rich plasma is then injected into the skin to encourage tissue regeneration and stimulate collagen production.

Following the procedure, growth factors and other natural nutrients are gradually released into the skin over the course of several days to further stimulate collagen production. This means results will not be instant, but will continue to improve & heal following treatment, in a natural way.

Depending on the skin concern and overall skin quality, patients may require more than one treatment session for optimum results.

Is PRP Safe?

PRP is known to be one of the safest treatments on the market. As it comes from the patient’s own blood, it carries minimal infection risk , as long as certified medical devices are used to produce the PRP & administered by qualified medical staff. There is minimal downtime following treatment.

PRP may not be recommended for pregnant women and may not be suitable for anybody who has cancer of the skin/ blood, or any cardiovascular disease, which requires blood thinning medication. The clinician would discuss this with the patient. For more information on PRP, contact RegenLab.
