What does PRP Treat?

Over the years, Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy, has dominated the aesthetics industry. Most commonly known for its facial rejuvenation abilities, PRP is actually highly effective in several conditions around the body, including sports injuries and even gynaecological.

What is PRP?

PRP stands for Platelet-Rich Plasma. It is a therapy that involves using the patient’s own blood to promote healing and tissue regeneration.

PRP is created by drawing a small amount of the patient’s blood and then processing it in a centrifuge to separate the platelets from the other components of the blood including plasma. The resulting concentrated solution of platelets contains key growth factors that can promote tissue repair and regeneration.

How is PRP Performed?

The process begins with a clinician drawing blood, like a regular blood test, and placing that blood into a specially designed centrifuge. The centrifuge spins the blood to isolate platelets, and other nutrients including growth factors to produce platelet-rich plasma.

This plasma is then injected into the target area to encourage the body to begin its natural healing process, which includes stimulating collagen production to repair and rebuild tissues.

Collagen is the most abundant protein within the body and is vital for overall skin and tissue health. In the skin, collagen helps to maintain overall skin health, and retain moisture. As we age, collagen production in the body slows down, which leads to fine lines, wrinkles, dryness, and a loss of overall volume.

What can PRP be used for?

PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) therapy can be used for a variety of medical and cosmetic purposes. Here are some of the conditions that PRP therapy has been used to treat:

Medical Uses:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Tendinitis
  • Muscle strains
  • Ligament sprains
  • Rotator cuff injuries
  • Sports injuries
  • Chronic wounds
  • Dental implants
  • Bone grafts
  • Spinal injuries

Cosmetic Uses:

  • Skin rejuvenation
  • Acne scars
  • Wrinkles
  • Sun damage
  • Hair loss
  • Stretch marks
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Skin texture improvement

The growth factors in platelets have been shown to promote tissue regeneration, reduce inflammation, and stimulate collagen production, making PRP therapy a promising treatment option for a variety of conditions.

However, it’s important to note that the effectiveness of PRP therapy may vary depending on the individual case, and it may not be suitable for all types of medical or cosmetic conditions. It’s important to speak with a qualified healthcare professional or dermatologist to determine if PRP therapy is a suitable treatment option for your specific condition.
